The manager believes that "the normal thing would have been a much better scoreline at the break"
He defends Alexis: "We can forgive him his missed chances, but we can’t forgive him if he doesn’t try, and he tries"

Tito Vilanova rued his men’s missed chances after tonight’s match: “In the first half we played at a good level and the normal thing would have been to go to the break with a better result.” The manager also contradicted Manuel Pellegrini, who declared that Málaga were the better side in the second half: “I don’t think Málaga were superior. In the first half we were the better side and in the second it was more equal.”

“It wasn’t an easy day to play”

Without using it as an excuse, the manager noted that “today wasn’t an easy day to play.” It was windy and the ball wasn’t optimal, said Vilanova, who also lamented the lack of chances created in the final 15 minutes of the match when Barça were up a man. “We didn’t open up the field when they were reduced to 10 men,” he said.

Tito defends Alexis

Vilanova was quick to come to Alexis’ aid when he was asked about the forward’s two missed chances in the first half: “Just like with Thiago, we need to help him. He’s a young player that goes all out. If he missed those chances it’s because he worked hard to create them. We can forgive him his missed chances, but we can’t forgive him if he doesn’t try, and he tries. He’s one of us and if we don’t help him it will be more difficult for him.”

Here are the statements made by the Barça players after the match:

Iniesta:

“It’s a shame but this is the Cup. We have to go there and win the match.”

Pinto:

“We deserved a better result but we still have 90 minutes to play. We know that it will be complicated but nothing has been decided.”

“We’re obligated to win. We know we can do it because we did it in La Liga.”

“The fans are very important to us. We feel like we’re accompanied by them and that gives us confidence. The fans encourage us and they give us strength.”

“We’re a bit sad but we have to pick ourselves up and move on.”

Mascherano:

“It’s a shame because we had chances to increase our lead, especially in the first half. We didn’t manage to convert those chances and we ended up conceding the equaliser while being up a man.”

“We shouldn’t feel down about it, what we need to do is correct the errors and go to Málaga and win the match.”

“Sometimes there are matches where we can’t play with the same fluidity that we have in other matches.”

“We shouldn’t go crazy about this, rather we just need to go to Málaga and win the game. This team has shown that it can win in any stadium.”

“It will be a difficult match because our opponent has very good players and a good manager.”

Puyol:

“Málaga didn’t give up. They kept on fighting and the managed to get their prize. We played against a good team today.”

“In the first half we played well, we could have scored more goals but it wasn’t meant to be. Now we have to go there and win.”

“We have to move on, learn from our errors and go to Málaga and win the game.”

FC Barcelona's Sporting Director talks about Pep Guardiola's decision to join Bayern Munich
Vilanova: "He's had time to choose and he selected Bayern Munich, a top notch club"

The German Club officially announced this Wednesday that ex-Barça manager Josep Guardiola will be their new head coach through 2016. The news didn’t go unnoticed at the Camp Nou. “I’m very pleased for Guardiola. It means that he’s doing well and that he’s well rested; it means that he’s eager to return to the world of football. Tito said this Tuesday that it’s good for someone like Guardiola to be involved in football,” said Andoni Zubizarreta after tonight’s match against Málaga.

FC Barcelona’s director of football said that he had no prior knowledge of the agreement and that he understands why Guardiola selected a team like Bayern: “Bayern are a club that can offer you a solid and stable project, they also have good players. He’s found what he was looking for and I’m happy for him.”

“Bayern are a top notch team”

Tito Vilanova also talked about Guardiola’s move to the German club: “I’m very happy that he decided to return. Bayern are a great team.” The FC Barcelona manager also noted that “from what I understand there was a confidentiality clause,” but he considers that Guardiola made the correct decision: “I don’t know how many teams or what kind of contracts he was offered but I’m sure they were all top notch. He’s had time to think about where to go. Bayern are an historic club, they have four Champions League titles to their name, and their facilities are fantastic.”

Here are Puyol, Mascherano and Pinto’s reactions to the news:

Puyol: “They are a very good team and he’s a fantastic manager. He’s going to one of the big clubs in Europe and I wish him the best.”

Mascherano: “It was expected for Guardiola to manage a great club and that’s what Bayern is. They have a lot of German players, they have a defined philosophy and style of play.”

Pinto: “We knew that he was eager to start managing again. I wish him the best. If he’s happy, we’re happy.”

The Argentinian has sent a shirt to the former German striker along with a letter from president Rosell to Bayern Munich president Karl-Heinz Rummenigge

Leo Messi ended 2012 with an all-time world record of 91 goals in a calendar year, thus breaking the previous best set by Gerd Müller (85 in 1972). Messi wanted to share the moment with the legendary player known as The Torpedo by sending him a Barça shirt on which he has written the message: “To Gerd Müller / My respect and admiration / A hug”.
The shirt has been sent along with a letter from FCB president Sandro Rosell to Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, the chief executive at Bayern Munich, in which he expresses his “recognition for the figure and person of Gerd Müller” adding that the previous record “was clearly an added motivation and target for Messi”.
“The love and admiration that our Club feels for Bayern and its supporters has once again been demonstrated through the historic bond between these two players who have set new standards and generated such sentiment among our respective fans”, said the Barça president.
